I believe we can choose what kind of spiritual experience we want to get involved in. One of the greatest gifts from our creator is free choice! Of course when I was small and I did not know God or hardly anything about Him and certainly I had not made any kind of a choice for Him or against Him, then I was open to bad experiences and for sure I have had them and I have written about them on this excellent web site.
Our experiences will largely depend on whether we are tuned in to good or evil thoughts. There are exceptions to this and one comes to mind immediately. Saint Pio who was the famous Padre Pio of Petrocina of the last century was a really Godly mystic. He was able to bilocate and had the ability to see right into a person's heart. He was even able to predict the future and when hearing the confession of a young priest, Father Carol Woitiwa he was able to tell him that he would reach the highest level in the Catholic Church. He did, as Pope John Paul the second.
Well he had some pretty awful spiritual experiences fighting off the attacks of the Devil especially at night and would be thrown out of his bed in his struggle against evil. You can read all about them on the Internet address below. I think he had to suffer these attacks in his youth because he was going to be used for great things during his long life. Comparable with the 40 days of wilderness temptations of Christ before His ministry began.
He was also able to levitate and there are many accounts of these happenings in his extraordinary life. He also had the stigmata in other words the wounds of Jesus after crucifixion. These were bloody and should have smelled foul but instead had a most beautiful aroma of wild flowers.
Many miracles were attributed to him however he always gave the glory for them to God. This web site will thrill you over the experiences of this extraordinary Friar who died 40 years ago.
Yesterday during Holy Mass and after reading and recording these events on my MP4 player, I was praying with the Host slowly dissolving in my mouth and I was thinking about Padre Pio and I began to notice, faint at first but then stronger whiff of perfume that was really beautiful. It was mixed with incense tho no incense had been burned during the Mass. I turned to my wife and kids and asked them if they could smell it. They couldn't.
How does one check if a spiritual experience is coming from good or evil? I think one of the main ways is to see how it leaves you. If it leaves you depressed and sad then it is pretty obvious it came from evil. It is rather like music. Music that makes me feel good or emotionally stirred to do good is good. If it arouses hatred and warlike tendencies, then it is surely from the evil side. I would be very interested to hear what others think.
Be my guest to comment for or against these ideas of mine and please take the time to check out the web site of Padre Pio.
