This story begins in 1976 when I first moved to oahu, at the time I was 22 and living in Kaaawa. I had gone at first to help build a large house on the beach next to the light house look out at Diamond Head. When the job was finished I sold my return ticket and looked for a place to live.
A friend had said I could live at a beach shack next to a large house rent free but that I had to keep the vegetation cut back. I had gotten a job at Honolulu Airport taking pictures of tourist arriving on chartered flights then I would try to sell them at the Luau that night. I didn't have much money and lived far in the country.
Every morning I would go out to the ocean and get my breakfast of fish and fruit. One day as I was walking up the beach I noticed a butterfly in a tide pool. I got my spear and lifted it out of the water and placed it on a rock and fanned it dry and said "You'll be ok now, stay away from the water" I went on my way and 2 hours later I came back and was wondering if the little butterfly had gotten into the water again.
As soon as I got to the tide pool and looked I saw the little butterfly flying in circles and then it came and landed on my shoulder. I said "Well, hello again, are you thanking me." we walked for 10 minutes to the house, climbed the large wall under the house to the lanai and I turned on the outside shower and said "little friend I have to go to work and you have to leave now and you stay away from the water" And with that said the little butterfly flew away and went towards the mountains.
That was one of the first times I really felt connected to a knowing of God and beings that have feelings and love. To this day I will not kill any living creation not even fish.
